Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Phnom Penh Arrive into Phnom Penh and transfer to your hotel. Explore the capital with visits to the Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda. Then continue on to the National Museum which houses over 5,000 objects on display including statues and artefacts, most notably the statues of the ‘leper king’.
Day 2: Phnom Penh Visit Champey Academy of Arts, a local non-profit school, and Ounalom Pagoda, the oldest Buddhist foundation in the city. Then hop on a cyclo to explore the colonial quarter, central market and Post Office. After that visit Wat Phnom, the founding place of the city on a small hilltop then head to the riverside area of Phnom Penh, a pleasant French style promenade that is great for watching the world go by. In the afternoon visit Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21) which acted as a detention centre during the Khmer Rouge years. Finally continue to the Killing Fields a profoundly moving experience which tells of the extermination camp and mass graves, where 8,000 skulls are still on display.
Day 3: Transfer to Phnom Penh airport for a domestic flight to Siem Reap. On arrival check into your hotel and then head to Angkor Thom – the last capital of the Khmers, with the South Gate of Angkor Thom, Bayon Temple, Baphoun Temple, Elephant Terrace and the Terrace of the Leper King. This 12th century masterpieceis an archaeological wonder containing more than 200 ‘faces’, silent but with the famous half-smile playing on their lips.
Day 4: Visit Angkor Wat temple, the largest temple in the world, with a volume of stone equalling that of the Cheops pyramid in Egypt. It is unlike all the other Khmer temples in that it faces west, and is inspired by 12th century Hinduism. Its symmetrical towers are stylized on the modern Cambodian flag. This afternoon, visit Ta Prohm, the temple that has been left largely in its natural state since its ‘re-discovery’ by French explorers. Surrounded by jungle, its labyrinth of stone hallways is overgrown with the roots and limbs of massive banyan trees, which envelop the stone like tentacles. It is one of the largest temples at Angkor, dedicated in 1186.
Day 5: Depart Siem Reap This morning, take a boat trip to visit the floating village at Kompong Khleang located 35 kilometres east of Siem Reap. Visitors to Kompong Khleang during the dry season are universally awestruck by the forest of stilted houses rising up to ten metres in the air. In the wet season the waters rise to within one or two metres of the buildings. Following the visit, check out from your hotel and depart Siem Reap for your onward journey.
